Getting started with Gemini

In this tutorial, we’ll cover:

  • How to access Google’s Gemini AI
  • A brief overview of the interface
  • Reasons to choose Gemini over other AI-powered chatbots

Accessing Google’s Gemini AI

Gemini can be accessed at gemini.google.com, which is the easiest way to start using it. You’ll need a Google account to access Gemini—if you already have a Gmail account, you’re good to go! If not, setting up a Google account is quick and free.

Gemini offers a free version, but for a more enhanced experience, consider upgrading to Gemini Advanced. This version operates on Google’s more powerful LLM, 1.0 Ultra, which is better equipped to handle complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following detailed instructions, and creative collaboration.

Gemini Advanced, powered by 1.0 Ultra, is part of the new Google One AI Premium plan, which also includes:

  • Gemini integrated into Gmail, Docs, and other Google services
  • 2 TB of cloud storage
  • Additional benefits

If you’ve only tried the free version of Gemini and found it lacking, Gemini Advanced is worth exploring. It comes with a 2-month free trial as part of the Google One AI Premium plan, offering the same benefits, including:

  • Gemini in Gmail, Docs, and more
  • 2 TB of storage
  • Other Google One perks

💡 Tip: For simplicity, we’ll refer to "Gemini" as "Gemini Advanced" from this point on, unless specified otherwise.

A Quick Tour of the Interface

Once you’re signed in, you’ll find Gemini’s interface easy to navigate. The main feature is the chatbox at the bottom, where you can type your questions or requests—these are called "prompts."

You can resume a previous conversation by selecting it from the left panel, and switch between Gemini and Gemini Advanced using the selector at the top, just above your name.

To start a chat, simply send your prompt to Gemini, and it will generate a response. You can continue the conversation by adding more prompts based on Gemini’s replies.

Additionally, you can include an image with your prompt or use voice input to enter your queries. We’ll cover effective prompt writing and explore Gemini’s unique features later in the course.

Why Choose Gemini?

Gemini isn’t the only AI chatbot out there; competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are also popular. However, Gemini stands out in several ways:

  • Seamless integration with Google’s other products like Gmail, Drive, YouTube, and Maps
  • No usage limits, even on paid tiers, unlike many other AI apps
  • Connection to Google Search, enabling it to verify its responses with up-to-date web information

Using Gemini instead of a basic Google search provides you with direct answers, rather than just a list of links. And that’s just the beginning—well-crafted prompts can help you accomplish many daily tasks, both personal and professional, with ease.
